Trestleboard September 2022

Chartered January 17th, 1924 A.D., 6924 A.L.

Greetings from the East,

Brethren,

I want to start by thanking all of the Brothers from our Lodge who helped during our Adopt a precinct fundraiser, especially Brothers Rudd, Franco Marrero, Glover, Ream, Skrine, Albright, and Hartman. I hope I did not leave anybody out. Eola Lodge is eternally thankful for your service and dedication.
Next, a little bit of Masonic history…
As many of you are aware, the American Revolution had a strong presence of Masonic ideals and heroic and celebrated Freemasons, such as Br. George Washington. However, some may not know that this was also the case  during the revolutionary wars in South America.  A very large part of Central and South America was colonized by Spain. What is now Ecuador, was one of those territories. On August 10, 2022, Ecuador celebrated the 213th anniversary of the “First Cry of Independence.”

Inspired by the American Revolution, and the revolutionary ideals born in France, the desire for Freedom starts brewing in South America. Ecuador, Colombia, Perú and Bolivia would not have been able to obtain their freedom from Spain without Brothers such as Marshall Antonio José de Sucre (Quito’s Airport is named after him, and the Country’s original currency was also named after him). Br. Sucre was born on February 3, 1795 in Cumaná, Venezuela, and was unfortunately murdered in Bolivia in 1830. He came from a family with a strong military tradition. He is considered to be one of the greatest military minds of his time and a hero of the revolutionary wars in the Continent. Archives from the Grand Lodge of Bolivia reference his membership in Perfecta Armonia Lodge (Perfect Harmony) #2.

There is much to say about, Br. Sucre, but i will leave you with the following highlights of his life: He was Bolivia’s first President, he freed the slaves in that Country, promoted education and culture for all, and he made it a mission to help orphans. He also created Hiram Lodge, in La Paz, Bolivia, and personally wrote its bylaws. Throughout his life, he was guided by the purest form of Masonic ideals.

Lastly, I will leave you with a fragment of a message from Br. Sucre to another hero of the wars of independence, Simon Bolívar: “Excellency, the field of battle has given us the decision…At Ayacucho six thousand men of the liberating army have destroyed the ten thousand royalist soldiers who have oppressed the Republic. The last remnants of Spanish power in America disappeared on December 9th on this happy field. Three hours of hard fighting assured forever the sacred interests which Your Excellency was good enough to entrust to the united army”

Fraternally,

Greetings from the South,

Brethren, the kitchen staff are delighted to be of service to the craft and making sure that everyone have a great meal experience in Eola. We hope that you are enjoying the meals as much as we do making them for you all.

I encourage you to be as active as possible with the fraternity.  Our Hard hat day was a success and we were able to dispose of the broken limbs.  Thank you  to all the brothers that showed up and to Demolay Sebastian Bogstad and his mother, Mrs. Heather Bogstad.  Eveeyone involved were key key into the success and on how smooth it all went.

Always remember to travel and to keep learning.  Masonry is not one dimensional.  You will always find new information that might change your perspective on things or that will expand your knowledge and understanding.  Our district’s instructor has monthly schools that will help you understand and perform better in our ritual.  Take advantage of his knowledge and keep getting better for yourself and the craft.

Sincerely,

Br. Jose Franco
